Dear reader,

Today marks a defining moment in Europe’s sustainable future. Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is now launched and will advance a competitive bioeconomy for the next ten years.

We have been all eagerly waiting for this moment. I would like to express my warmest congratulations to the people and organisations involved in preparing the launch. We have reached this crucial milestone thanks to your hard work, perseverance, and dedication.

CBE JU, the new €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) is building on the success of its predecessor BBI JU. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the whole BBI JU community – beneficiaries of our projects, members of the advisory bodies and the Governing Board, the founding partners, our experts, colleagues from the BBI JU Programme Office and all the stakeholders who have been developing European bio-based industries over the past years – for their important contribution towards this success. It was the determining factor in the creation of CBE JU.

Circular bio-based industries are considered a key enabler of the green transition towards a resilient, competitive and environmentally sustainable EU economy. The work of CBE JU will contribute to the EU’s climate neutrality goal by 2050 and will support the implementation of EU policies working towards this objective. The initiative also underscores the political importance of the bioeconomy in advancing Europe’s competitive edge. By sparking innovation, stimulating collaboration, creating jobs and de-risking investments, CBE JU-funded projects will also boost the local economies across European regions, in particular in rural and coastal areas, and create a shared long-term strategic vision for the sector. Today, we are thrilled to take up this important mission.

The motto of the CBE JU Programme Office is ‘Building a greener, safer and better Europe’. I can say with pride that my colleagues and I are ready for the challenge, and I hope you will join us in this adventure. We are looking forward to working with you and achieving many great things together!

We have changed, but you shouldn’t! We made everything possible to ensure that nothing changes for you. We are sitting in the same offices, in the same building, in the same city. You can ask questions in the same place too. How convenient!

Your BBI JU-funded project

Are you a beneficiary of a BBI JU-funded project? The project coordinators have received detailed information on how the changes affect you. Anyway, we can give you a hint here: nothing changes for you. You can happily continue working on your project for a competitive bioeconomy in Europe.
