Leading the charge in Ramping-up e-Fuel production in Chile

INERATEC now actively seeks strategic partnerships with local and international stakeholders interested in the construction of these state-of-the-art e-Fuel plants and the off-take of sustainable fuels produced

INERATEC, a pioneering force in the e-Fuel sector, together with the German Agency of cooperation (GIZ) announce significant results for the implementation of production plants in Chile. The key results for building the e-Fuel industry in Chile were showcased in a landmark event in Santiago de Chile on March 5, 2024. This ambitious initiative marks a milestone in the journey towards a sustainable future, highlighting the potential of Power-to-Liquid technology to revolutionize the production of e-Fuels in Chile and beyond.

The project was part of the International Hydrogen Ramp-up Program (H2Uppp) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), that promotes projects and market development for green hydrogen and derivatives, which is implemented in the region by the German Agency of cooperation (GIZ) with the collaboration of AHK Chile.

Chile has an exceptional potential to produce large amounts of e-Fuels, validated and advanced through the studies conducted in the project. Within H2Uppp, INERATEC has identified ten viable sites for establishing cutting-edge e-Fuel plants. These locations have been meticulously selected based on thorough analysis of local resources and economic feasibility. This included identifying potential suppliers of raw materials such as renewable energy, CO2 and water availability as well as potential buyers. To be able to exploit the potential, the design of a Power-to-Liquid plant with a capacity of up to 50,000 tons per annum of e-Fuels was conducted. This production scale will significantly bolster the nation’s commitment to renewable energy and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The Strategic Importance of Green Hydrogen in Chile

The integration of green hydrogen in the production of e-Fuels aligns with Chile’s national hydrogen strategy, ensuring a reduction in the dependency on fossil fuel imports as well as a mitigation of risks associated with global oil price fluctuations and supply disruptions. This strategic direction enhances the resilience of Chile’s energy sector and elevates the competitive edge of its industries on the global stage.

Philipp Engelkamp, Managing Director of INERATEC, emphasizes the transformative potential of this project, stating, “H2Uppp is an initiative sharing the vision of a future fueled by clean energy. This project results in a pivotal step towards the next era of mobility and industrial processes. By harnessing the power of green hydrogen and Power-to-X technology, we’re ending the dependency on fossil fuels. This is about creating a robust, sustainable ecosystem that propels countries like Chile and similar economies into a new age of industrial competitiveness and environmental stewardship.”

As the preparation of production sites goes ahead, INERATEC now actively seeks strategic partnerships with local and international stakeholders interested in the construction of these state-of-the-art e-Fuel plants and the off-take of sustainable fuels produced. This endeavor presents a unique opportunity for investors and industry partners to be at the forefront of the sustainable transformation of the energy and mobility sectors.

For George Cristodorescu, head of GIZ Regional Energy Cluster, “the H2Uppp programme supports projects that can boost the local economy and can be replicated in other areas. In this case, the local production of synthetic fuels from green hydrogen will help to improve the competitiveness of Chilean industry by reducing its carbon footprint, while favouring energy independence, avoiding the use and import of fossil fuels”. These e-Fuels are focused on those industries that are difficult to electrify. Hard-to-abate sectors such as mining, heavy transport and aviation, will be able to transform sustainably without changing their infrastructure or engines.

A catalyst for global transformation

The results of the H2Uppp project underscore the viability and economic attractiveness of e-Fuel production in Chile, offering a blueprint for similar initiatives in developing and emerging countries worldwide. INERATEC is committed to leading the charge in this global shift towards sustainability, leveraging our expertise and innovative technologies to make e-Fuels from green hydrogen a cornerstone of the world’s energy landscape.
