UK: Stanelco wins FDA approval for biodegradable plastic

UK company Stanelco has gained FDA approval for its Wrap 100 biodegradable material to be used in food contact applications in the US.

Stanelco, which is also developing its Greenseal radio frequency sealing technology for plastic lids, is targeting the fast food sector for Wrap 100. The material’s properties do not allow oil or moisture to pass through it, but permit moisture vapour to permeate out.

The company claims that unlike waxed paper currently used for burgers and other fast food, Wrap 100 is a fully biodegradable material and can also compete on a cost neutral basis.

The material is now being trialled by a major quick service restaurant and has passed preliminary testing. The FDA approval allows it to undergo live trialling in restaurants.

Chief executive Martin Wagner said: “We are very excited about the opportunities for Wrap 100. It has properties that will help significantly improve packaging quality in the fast food sector, whilst at the same time providing benefits to the environment.”
