Opening of Biocomposite Bridge in Almere, NL

SCB Smart Circular Bridge, EU project INTERREG

SCB Smart Circular Bridge, which is in the form of a High-tech bridge built with flax to have an innovative aspect for climate protection. The bridge is made of biocomposites including natural flax fibers and bioresin, with integrated 100 sensors to provide daily data on the materials behaviour all day and in all seasons. The data will be evaluated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize patters in material behaviour within and along the bridge’s body.

The data can be seen in real time by all public communities through this online dashboard.

The first bridge set up at the Floriade international horticulture exhibition in Almere, Netherlands will open April 22nd. Two more “Smart Circular bridges” for pedestrians and cyclists will be built in Ulm, Germany and Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands later in 2022 and in 2023 respectively. Through this intensive cooperation between science, industry, and local authorities, a multitude of innovations is launched.
