nova Newsletter July 2016

Your monthly update on nova-Institute's activities

Dear Readers,

nova-Institute’s latest news at a glance – all details in the newsletter below:

  • nova’s conference on industrial hemp that took place in Wesseling (near Cologne) in the beginning of June broke all records: 300 participants from 41 countries made it the biggest event of its kind ever ( Shortly after the conference, hemp fibres from the Netherlands were the first technical natural fibres worldwide to receive the well-established ISCC sustainability certificate (
  • Next, we will focus on direct use of CO2: On 6 and 7 December, nova will organise the “5th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers”. For the first time, it will take place in Cologne, as the previous location has become too small. The programme features many interesting speakers already and, very importantly: Until the end of August, an early bird discount of 20% on all tickets and a free booth for the first ten exhibitors are available. All details in the newsletter.
  • The bio-based economy needs its own trade fairs to showcase its products and as meeting points for the industry. nova-Institute supports the following three market leaders:
    • The bio-based composites pavilion at Composites Europe, 29 November to 1 December 2016 at Messe Düsseldorf (DE). The meeting point for the whole biocomposites industry, WPC and NFC.
    • The BiobasedWorld will premiere on 15 and 16 February 2017 at Cologne trade fair (DE) and will showcase the whole value chain of the bioeconomy, from feedstocks to chemistry to bio-based products.
    • The MAP EXPO in Eindhoven (NL) will open its doors on 29-30 March 2017 as the first global market place for medicinal and spice plants.
  • The first two nova Sessions on CCU and bio-based feedstocks were well received, shared a lot of information and sparked lively discussions. Because of the active demand, we are offering the nova Session “Biomass feedstocks today and in the future – going beyond food vs. fuel” again on 8 September. Interested parties should register quickly at to make sure they can participate!
  • The new market study by narocon (Berlin, DE) and nova takes a look at the use of biodegradable and compostable plastics in Europe – at the moment 100,000 t with potential for growth.
  • There is a summer promotion for nova-Institute’s big market study on biopolymers: If you buy now, you will get the data update in January 2017 for free. Which influence will the low oil price have on the growth of bio-based polymers?
  • Last but not least we would like to introduce nova-Institute’s chief financial officer: Stefanie Clermont.

Best regards and here’s hoping that summer will finally catch up!

Kind regards

Michael Carus
Managing Director, nova-Institut GmbH

algaeparcMicroalgae Process Design: from cells to photobioreactors (4th edition)

8 – 15 July 2016, Wageningen, The Netherlands

The waters of the world, oceans, seas, rivers, creeks, lakes and even ice, house a tremendous variety of microorganisms able to use light as the only source of energy to fuel metabolism. These unicellular organisms, microalgae and cyanobacteria, have the potential to produce a variety of products. To make economical large-scale production of such bulk products possible, the cost price for production needs to be reduced, the scale of production needs to be increased substantially and the biomass value should be maximized. In this course “Microalgae Process Design: from cells to photobioreactors” the biology and cultivation part are covered.

splashalgaeparcMicroalgae Biorefinery (1st edition)

18 – 20 July 2016, Wageningen, The Netherlands

To make microalgae a source of bulk products, the cost price for production needs to be reduced, the scale of production needs to be increased significantly and the biomass value should be maximized. To develop a more sustainable and economically feasible process, all biomass components (e.g. proteins, lipids, carbohydrates) should be used at minimal energy requirements and minimal costs while keeping the functionality of the different biomass components. Biorefining of microalgae is very important for the selective separation and use of the functional biomass components. In this course, ‘Microalgae Biorefinery’, the downstream part, i.e. the biorefinery will be in focus.
