Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) is looking to create New Wealth for the Nation through innovation. Already one of Malaysia’s strongest assets, the palm oil industry has a unique opportunity to drive a whole new chapter in Malaysia’s journey to 2020. Together with key players across government, industry and academia, AIM have worked to develop a new strategy to capture the potential of oil palm waste as a source of growth and value for the future.
AIM have engaged with 20 government agencies, 20 private sector players and 10 universities and public research institutes in this inclusive innovation effort. The new strategy provides the roadmap for utilising some of the 80 million tonnes of fronds, trunks, shells, fibers and empty fruit bunches and other by-products produced by palm oil plantations every year to create high value new industries, thousands of new jobs, new exports for Malaysia and attract FDI
It will build on Malaysia’s strengths to deliver:
- Downstream value
- High value jobs
- Development in rural areas
- New “indigenous technology” within Malaysia
- Scope for lower carbon emissions and sustainability impact
It is believed that the new strategy will put Malaysia on the map as a world leader in the development of new, innovative and sustainable industries. On 21 November, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok,Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities and Dato’ Kamal Jit Singh, CEO of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia launched the “National Biomass Strategy” at BioMalaysia 2011 witnessed by Y.A.B Prime Minister of Malaysia.
