In early January 2015, DuPont Industrial Biosciences and EcoStrateSFS, Inc., signed an agreement establishing the first post-consumer recycling programme for commercial and residential carpet made with biopolymer DuPont™ Sorona®.

The biopolymer contains 37 percent (by weight) annually renewable plant-based ingredients. Publicly available environmental data also shows that material production saves 30 percent energy and 63 percent greenhouse gas emissions compared to the production of conventional nylon 6.

The two companies will jointly develop and commercialise products using recovered post-consumer carpet made with DuPont’s biopolymer.

EcoStrate, currently a manufacturer of signage, promotional items and mud flaps, is also exploring other applications including flooring, pallets and building materials. “Post-industrial recycling of DuPont™ Sorona® has been practiced for years. Now we have  focused on identifying post-consumer recycling solutions for carpet made with DuPont™ Sorona®.  We believe that EcoStrate has an innovative program and our collaboration will be a benefit to both the carpet and recycling industries,” says John Lyons, Global Business Development Manager for DuPont™ Sorona®.
