Assobioplastiche signs agreement with thai bioplastics industry

ASSOCIATIONKey points include know-how sharing, focus on certification systems and joint market development

Marco Versari, President of Assobioplastiche, and Professor Phietoon Trivijitkasem, President of the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association (TBIA), today signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the two associations collaborating closely over a 5-year period.

Under the agreement Assobioplastiche and TBIA will cooperate in the following areas:
1. sharing know-how in the areas of industrial composting and waste management;
2. establishing certification systems and quality standards for the entire bioplastics industry;
3. coordinating and implementing joint initiatives for research, market development and environmental policies;
4. developing business, training and networking initiatives.

“Thanks to technological innovation, growing awareness of environmental topics, the environment and policies that put ever more emphasis on sustainable development, the Italian and European bioplastics industry is growing quickly and providing new opportunities for international cooperation. The agreement signed today will create a platform of high-level technological know-how, and above all will make a significant contribution towards determining certifications and quality standards which are indispensable for creating a clear and unequivocal definition of the reference parameters for bioplastics producers,” said Marco Versari, the President of Assobioplastiche.

According to Professor Trivijitkasem, “The signing of this memorandum of understanding is fully in line with the direction taken by the association since it was set up. The TBIA is working hard to encourage the use of compostable plastics and promote new practices to minimise the impact of waste. A new compostability standard will shortly be introduced in Thailand along the lines of the ISO 17088 standard.”

Whereas Supachai Lorlowhakarn, Director of the National Innovation Agency (NIA), said “Thailand aims to become the Asian centre of excellence for development of the bioplastics industry. The study of best practices for the management of waste and resources is fundamental for the creation of virtuous systems of sustainable development.”
