The “Value Chain Event on Carbohydrates and Specialty Industrial Crops” is organised by the European funded projects Magic and PANACEA and presents the tools and platforms developed in the projects for the cultivation of industrial crops on marginal land in Europe. As carbohydrate and speciality crops, such as sweet sorghum, sugar beet, calendula, lavender or peppermint, are well suited to grow on marginal land, the event will discuss the entire value chain for these kinds of industrial crops. PANACEA platform and MAGIC up-to-date database for industrial crops growing on marginal land, will be presented at the beginning of the webinar by the project leader Dr. Efi Alexopoulou from CRES and Mr. Panayiotis Stamatelopoulos from AUA.

Also, other projects working in the field of carbon hydrates and speciality crops, such as 4CE-MED; UNTWIST; MEDIOPUNTIA and ADAPT will present their latest findings.

ADAPT project will be represented by Dr. Markus Teige from University of Vienna, in this project researcher use molecular understanding of stress acclimation for the development of stress tolerant potatoes. The UNTWIST project, focuses on Uncover and promote tolerance and water stress in camelina sativa. The project will be presented by Dr. Claudia Jonak from Austrian Institute of Technology as project leader.

The Medi Opuntia project – Promoting cactus plantation on large scale in marginal lands of Mediterranean countries will be presented by Prof. Ana Luisa Fernando from FCT UNL.

The last part of the webinar will be concentrated towards innovative medicinal plant value chains showing the results of EIP-AGRI Focus Group 35 Sustainable Industrial Crops and Focus group 40 as well as the situation of specialty crops by Discussion on the value-chain of carbohydrate and specialty industrial crops by Prof. Dimitrios Argypoulos from UCD.

At the end of the webinar the discussion on the value-chain of carbohydrate and specialty industrial crops will be open to all participants leaded by Dr. Juliana Navarro Rocha from CITA.
