Matthias is Head of the Sustainability Department at nova-Institute, where he supports companies in turning sustainability assessments into practical decisions, strategies and actions. Together with his team of seven experts, he works with industrial clients on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), sustainability analysis, strategic consulting and training, with a strong focus on Renewable Carbon, chemicals and materials.
A central part of his work is helping organisations understand sustainability as more than just reporting and effort. Rather than treating LCA results, carbon footprints or other indicators as an endpoint, Matthias works with clients to translate them into priorities, concrete measures, substantiated claims and scalable implementation.
From Analysis to Strategy
Matthias supports companies in developing sustainability strategies that build on existing resources, ongoing activities and complementary projects. His focus is on identifying synergies, connecting initiatives and creating approaches that can be implemented effectively across an organisation.
His work ranges from sustainability assessments and strategic workshops to decision frameworks that link environmental performance with product, technology and business decisions.
Building Sustainability Knowledge
Another focus is training and capability building. Matthias develops formats for different target groups, recognising that sustainability knowledge must match the decisions people actually make.
While sustainability specialists may need to follow the latest methodological developments, commercial teams need to understand topics such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), sustainability claims and competitor communication. The aim is to make sustainability knowledge usable across the organisation, not just within specialist teams.
Methodological Expertise and European Perspective
Since 2024, Matthias has been an expert in the European Commission’s Environmental Footprint Technical Advisory Board (EFTAB), contributing expertise on Renewable Carbon and circular material cycles to ongoing methodological development.
Matthias joined nova-Institute in 2020 and has a background in engineering, product management and Life Cycle and Sustainability. He holds a Master’s degree and PhD in the field and has extensive experience in applying LCA in industrial contexts.
