    Advanced recycling technologies are developing at a fast pace, with new players constantly appearing on the market, from start-ups to giants and everything in between – new plants are being built, new capacities are being achieved, and new partnerships are established. Due to these developments, it is difficult to keep track of everything. The report “Mapping of advanced recycling technologies for plastics waste” aims to clear up this jungle of information providing a structured, in-depth overview and insight. It has an exclusive focus on profiling available technologies and providers of advanced recycling including the addition of new technologies and updated/revised profiles.

    Rohstoffe werden knapp, sowohl Metalle wie auch Mineralien. Nur erneuerbarer Kohlenstoff ist praktisch unbegrenzt verfügbar. Daher werden Kunststoffe in Zukunft noch wichtiger sein als heute, und deshalb müssen sie so nachhaltig wie möglich gestaltet werden: aus erneuerbarem Kohlenstoff und voll recycelbar.

    Das Image der Kunststoffe steht heute in der Krise. Wie konnte es so weit kommen und was kann man tun, um das Image wieder zu verbessern? Kunststoffe sind wichtiger denn je für eine nachhaltige Zukunft. Alle Technologien stehen zur Verfügung, um Kunststoffe umweltfreundlich zu gestalten und im Kreislauf zu fahren. Wie können wir die Gesellschaft wieder davon überzeugen, dass eine Welt mit den richtigen Kunststoffen komfortabler, ressourcenschonender und klimafreundlicher sein wird als ohne?

    The good practice catalogue is the result of the collection and evaluation of good practices of the circular economy from the work of the project WoodCircus. 26 good practices are showcased, divided into four different categories:

    1. Circular economy concepts;
    2. Efficiency and processing;
    3. Reuse and recycling and
    4. Waste and side stream utilisation. Each good practice is presented with an individual fact sheet describing the focus on the technology or process, regionality and transferability, and highlighting particular strengths with respect to the circular economy.

    WoodCircus opened the discussion with industry experts on how to measure the circularity of wood. The result is a rating system with the 13 social, economic and environmental indicators, which was used to compare practices in the wood sector and develop a catalogue of good practices. This document describes the 13 criteria in detail and provides an example of their application.

    The climate crisis is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, with global warming, greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation leading to food insecurity, global health problems and biodiversity loss. Greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use of carbon-containing fossil energy sources such as oil, coal and natural gas have been shown to be a major contributor to climate change. Thus, for decades the focus of climate protection has been predominantly on the energy sector. A new initiative is now expanding this view. Learn about the history and activities of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI).

    The plastics industry of the future will be decoupled from petrochemicals and will meet its carbon needs primarily from recycling. This alone will not close the renewable carbon cycle. The unavoidable losses will then be closed by bio- and CO2-based polymers.

    This paper describes a fossil carbon tax as a potential realisation of the planned Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism of the EU. It provides several advantages compared to a CO2 emission tax, such as complexity, carbon leakage, eligibility to WTO rules or taxation coverage of all sectors in the economy. With its focus on the raw material aspect, it is a much simpler and elegant approach than an end-of-pipe solution that looks at CO2 emissions.
