The US based WPC company Strandex Corp. has acquired Mount Horeb-based toolmaker Wire Works Inc. and expects to make another purchase soon. “The new plant will be fully operational in July”, Al England said in a telephone interview wih Plastics News. “Every day, interest in our foamed polyethylene-based and PVC-based composite technologies grows because they present so many new product opportunities,” England said in a news release announcing the deal.
Strandex develops wood-plastic composites technology and licenses it to several lumber extruders. The company’s latest development is called Strancel – a wood-composite foaming technology producing “cellular” WPC the company claims offers all the traditional benefits but with considerably less weight. Strancel produces individual rope-like “strands” of wood flour encapsulated in polyethylene, that when combined with a cellular foaming compound results in a product that looks and feels like real wood with the protection of vinyl.
Strandex has several licensees, including Composatron Manufacturing Inc., Kroy Building Products Inc., Universal Forest Products Inc., Premium Composites LLC and some European and Asian extruders.
