UPM ProFi Deck composite decking chosen for sustainable building projects

ProFi Composite Deck plays role in international Solar Decathlon Competition

Innovative UPM ProFi Deck composite decking will be used in two building projects in an international academic architectural competition Solar Decathlon. The German and Danish competition teams rely on the environmentally sustainable, high-quality UPM ProFi Deck with superior stain resistance, good friction and strength.

In the renowned Solar Decathlon competition, with an emphasis on innovativeness and sustainability, universities from all over the world design and build full-scale, solely solarpowered houses. The purpose is to improve education and research in the fields of architecture and solar energy. This year the competition is held in Versailles, France.

UPM ProFi deckings combine beauty and performance. The deckings with a unique closed surface technology for lasting performance are available in two styles, Design and Classic range, and 12 different colours. UPM ProFi Deck system includes a patented solution for professional stair building. Smart installation with a full selection of accessories for any application completes the perfect deck experience.

In the German competition entry, approximately 200 square meters of UPM ProFi Deck in Silver Green was installed. It was used in all of the ramps and platforms around the house as well as in the chairs of the outside lounging area. “Due to the expected amount of visitors in the house, high durability was a major factor when choosing the decking material. Using an environmentally friendly product was also important for us, especially because of the large size of the deck area”, says Sebastian Fiedler, Professor at University of Applied Sciences, Frankfurt am Main. The Danish team opted for 65 square meters of decking boards in Silver Green.

“We are delighted that the new architect generation sees UPM ProFi composite products as a natural part of low-energy and energy-plus housing”, says Edward Robinson, Director Sales and Marketing, UPM Biocomposites.

In addition to innovative decking materials, the UPM ProFi product portfolio includes design floor tiles for balconies and terraces, strong fence systems for gardens and modern cladding solution for exterior paneling.

UPM ProFi composite deckings are recycled and recyclable, made from at least 50 percent of recycled materials. The products are PVC free and non-toxic. UPM ProFi Deck holds both CE marking and PEFC certificate. The deckings are designed and manufactured in Finland, Germany and the United States.

The concept behind the name relies on the splitting of the building envelope in two parts: thermal envelope and weather shield. www.solardecathlon.dk/wordpress

The German project’s main idea is an additional living space based on a build-up on top of an existing building. The elevated and ideally unshaded build-up is able to produce an energy surplus by integrated solar energy technique. www.ontop2014.de/?lang=en
