The Biotechnology Industry Organization’s (BIO) 2013 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy will feature presentations on recent innovations in using synthetic biology for renewable chemicals and algae biofuels. Current uses of synthetic biology include engineering synthetic rubber to be used for tires, generating “green chemicals” from agricultural waste, and creating energy saving fuels. The Pacific Rim Summit will be co-organized by BIOCOM and held in San Diego, December 8-11, 2013 at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter.
“Synthetic biology is promoting rapid growth and evolutionary changes in industrial biotechnology,” Brent Erickson, Executive Vice President of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section said regarding the upcoming Synthetic Biology, Algae and Marine Biotechnology Track. “Researchers and companies are utilizing this new tool to speed the development of new products and processes for biofuels and renewable chemicals. BIO’s Pacific Rim Summit will provide a forum for sharing the latest advancements in synthetic biology.”
With a complete track of breakout sessions on Synthetic Biology, Algae and Marine Biotechnology, the Pacific Rim Summit will showcase how advances in technology have allowed researchers to control DNA, making it easier to engineer cells to the desired end point; how recent progress in the understanding of the biological circuitry of algae and cyanobacteria has led to effective application of technologies used for food, feed, and medicine; and how the use of native biosynthetic pathways can achieve an increase of yields of desired products, such as renewable chemicals.
