SuperBIO developed its first new and innovative value chains!

The news cross-boarder and cross-sectional industrial value chains: paper pulp, citrus peel and crab waste

SuperBIO is an innovation project (Horizon2020) supporting SMEs in the bio-based economy. SuperBIO aims to bring new cross-border and cross-sectoral industrial value chains closer to the market. SMEs can receive professional innovation services 75% funded by SuperBIO. It has a fast and efficient submission and evaluation procedure. Since its start in summer 2016, the project has already developed three new and innovative value chains with EU companies:

Producing More Biogas From Paper Making Residues By Using Epicellulyse Xt

Episome Biotechnologies is a Turkish enzyme development company. They developed an industrial enzyme mixture (Epicellulyse XT) that transforms long cellulose chains in paper sludge to shorter ones. The resultant material becomes pumpable and suitable for digestion by methanogenic bacteria. Flanders Biobased Valley connected them with Sappi Lanaken Mill, a Flemish Pulp and Paper Manufacturer and OWS, a Flemish biogas operator in order to investigate the added-value of their technology in this case. They exchanged samples to test the enzyme mix and to determine the biogas potential and Episome received support in regulatory landscape analysis with NNFCC and economics and market research with nova-institute.

Joining SuperBIO enhanced and accelerated our efforts to spread our technology to important business partners in the EU region.

Developing A Biorefinery Business Case On Citrus Peel Waste

PeelPioneers, a Dutch start-up, has a clear goal: valorizing citrus peel waste from industry and restaurants. First essential oils are extracted, these can be used for cosmetic or cleaning applications.  The remaining material can be used as pectin-ready peel if the waste is food proof, or as fiber in fiber applications. Citrus peel currently ends up in anaerobic digestion, although it is not a suitable substrate. PeelPioneers established access to this waste material, while SuperBIO helped with constructing the value chain consisting of NS (National Railways, NL) for the feedstock, Eco-point (NL) to use the essential oils in cleaning products and Ecotreasures (BE) with expertise in extraction of essential oils from fruit waste. Currently, PeelPioneers is translating its process to an industrially relevant process together with Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant. They are also looking for subsidy opportunities together with BiotechSubsidy.

SuperBIO provided insight into the importance of establishing a clear value chain in which all interests are aligned and everyone is ready for cooperation

Linking Spanish Crab Waste With A Uk Biotechnological Conversion

SuperBIO supported Pennog ltd (t/a Pennotec, UK) in finding potential feedstock sources in Spain for their biological chitin extraction process. With the support of Fundación Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía (CTA) contact was made with Ecocelta, a Spanish organic waste recycling and fertilizer company in Galicia. The chitin produced through the biotechnological process is targeted for use in agricultural and water treatment markets. Pennog Ltd is receiving support from a Norwegian and a UK-based international company in exploring potential routes to market for their product. SuperBIO is offering business planning (BCNP), market research and regulatory landscape analysis (NNFCC).
