The second RPA Biomass Conference was held on Tuesday 19 July 2005 at Queens’ College, Cambridge and was attended by over 200 delegates. The conference was followed by a Drinks Reception, sponsored by Renewables East and a Conference Dinner which was co-hosted by the RPA and Renewables East.

Renewables East Biofuels Conference
Renewables East, the renewable energy agency for the East of England in association with the HGCA hosted their Biofuels conference on Wednesday 20 July. This event moved forward the debate on biofuels with a strong emphasis on the commercial and business issues surrounding the development of a UK biofuel industry.

Lord Oxburgh, Chairman of Shell, gave the oil companies perspective on biofuels, while Andrew Owens, Chief Executive of Greenergy, a company that has 5% share of the UK fuels market, talked about plans to use UK rapeseed in 2006. Other speakers covered environmental issues and look at why biofuels are good news for high performance cars.

Site Tour of Elean Power Station

Approximately 50 delegates attended a complimentary tour of Elean Power Station, Ely, Cambridgeshire on the afternoon of Wednesday 20 July.
This 38MW plant strategically located in the UK’s major arable farming area, consumes 50 to 60 half-tonne straw bales per hour and is fed by a fleet of dedicated trucks collecting from farms up to 80km away.
