Researchers invited to apply to the Bioindustrial Research and Innovation Funding Program 2012-13

Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions is accepting applications to the new "Bioindustrial Research and Innovation Program 2012-13"

The purpose of this $1.5 million program is to stimulate new business opportunities for the forest and agricultural sectors, helping to strengthen and diversify Alberta’s economy.

Through projects funded by this program we aim to support researchers and business innovators in developing a variety of innovative, competitive products or processes using renewable biobased fibre feedstocks within the following specific areas of interest:

• Green building materials, components and technologies.
• Biomaterials based on cellulose, lignin and hemi-cellulose.
• Biocomposites – based on natural agricultural or forestry fibres and including combinations with non-natural materials or built-up systems.

Researchers or other individuals from academic institutions, industrial associations, operating companies, and other organizations are invited to submit a letter of intent (LOI) to the program as the first step of the application process for a non-repayable research grant.

Grants for a minimum of $100,000 per project for up to three years are available to qualified applicants for eligible expenses.

Successful projects will address research questions related to Alberta’s rich renewable resources and will also support Alberta’s agriculture and forest sectors in building capacity in the development of new bioindustrial products and processes.

Projects must commence in 2013 and be completed by April 1, 2016.

Applications should have a strong connection to Alberta.

The deadline for receipt of the LOI is Friday August 31 at 2:00 p.m. MDT.
