PTTMCC Biochem’s pioneering move for global bioplastics leadership

JV aiming to create innovations and green products under “Green for Life” business approach

At September 2, Mr. Pailin Chuchottaworn, PTT Plc President & CEO, presided over a ceremony marking the laying of the foundation stone for the Bio PBS (polybutylene succinate bioplastics) plant operated by PTTMCC Biochem Co., Ltd. Located in the Asia Industrial Estate in the province of Rayong, this is the world’s first commercial PBS bioplastics plant.

Mr.Worawat Pitayasiri, PTTMCC Biochem Managing Director, said this plant is a joint investment between PTT Plc and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) of Japan, with a common intention of creating innovations and green products that are friendly to the environment and communities while aligning with sustainable futuristic lifestyles under PTT Group’s “Green for Life” business approach, as well as MCC’s establishment of technologies based on human sustainability and KAITEKI lifestyles. Bio PBS production is therefore based on natural raw materials and biodegradable products. Constructed by a joint venture of Hitachi Plant Technology (Thailand) Co., Ltd., and Toyo Thai Corporation Plc, the 20,000-ton/year plant is due for completion by 2015 as the world’s first commercial PBS bioplastics plant.

The PTT CEO said that today’s foundation stone laying ceremony is regarded as PTT Group’s milestone move for a truly green business. Last year, the group had created the “PTT Group Wanarom Eco Forest” at the entrance to the Asia Industrial Estate in a five-rai area under the first phase. It was the first time that a green area has been in place even before plant construction. This illustrates PTT’s commitment to developing its area in the industrial estate as the prototype of Thailand’s eco-industries under the group’s Green Roadmap action plan.

The ceremony was also honored by the presence of H.E. Mr. Shigekazu Sato, the Ambassador of Japan to Thailand, and Mr. Hiroaki Ishizuka, CEO & President, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation of Japan, both of whom congratulated PTTMCC Biochem on its historic move under this successful venture. The plant is part of the PTT WEcoZI (PTT Wanarom Eco Zone Industries).
