Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ: KDP) and sustainable packaging manufacturer PAPACKS, based in Cologne – Germany, today announced the start of a partnership to develop a fully recyclable and compostable paper bottle.
Innovation is critical to meeting consumer needs, driving growth and furthering our commitment to sustainability. On the beverage packaging front, we have begun work with Keurig Dr Pepper to develop the first fully recyclable and compostable paper bottle. This innovation will support the commitment to reduce Keurig Dr Pepper’s use of virgin plastic by 2025% by 20, which is part of the Drink Well. Do Good. corporate responsibility platform.
To advance this sustainable packaging alternative, Keurig Dr Pepper is partnering with PAPACKS®, a packaging manufacturer based in Cologne, Germany. Unlike other beverage packaging alternatives that use plant-based PET plastic or sustainably sourced pulp with a polymer liner, KDP will use PAPACKS® technology that uses fiber and organic materials to create a 100% plastic-free bottle. The goal is for the entire package – including the bottle, label, cap and closure – to be compostable or recyclable with other paper products at rubbish collection in most communities in the US.
The prototype of the new bottle is expected by the end of 2022. The plan is to test the innovation in selected products from KDP’s entire beverage portfolio – from water to juices and carbonated drinks.
Our new paper bottle prototype is one of many projects KDP is currently undertaking to develop and test packaging solutions that focus on improving consumer experience and shelf presence, while reducing the company’s consumption of virgin plastic. Other projects in development include:
- A compostable K-Cup® pod for the home
- Improved recyclability for different types of packaging
- Improved recyclability of substrates for returnable beverage containers
- Increased use of recycled materials in all KDP beverage packaging and coffee machines
We look forward to working with Keurig Dr Pepper and combining our complementary expertise and resources to create an innovative and differentiated plastic-free beverage solution that meets consumer expectations for quality and convenience.
