Two important events you shouldn’t miss are coming up:
5-6 April, 9th International Conference on Bio-Based Materials, Maternushaus, Cologne (DE); We expect 250 participants and 30 exhibitors from all over the world at this established meeting point of the bio-based industry.
Market leaders will showcase the latest developments and trends in bio-based building blocks and polymers at this leading international conference. Special focus points of the conference this year are biorefinery concepts, trends in use of lignin and the production of PHA. With 7 presentations about PHA, the conference provides a comprehensive overview of this interesting and exciting biodegradable polymer.
Like every year, six innovative bio-based products have been nominated for the desired award “Bio-based Material of the Year 2016”. The participants of the conference will vote for the winner after the candidates have introduced their materials in short presentations. 7 April, Bio-based Start-up Day, Maternushaus, Cologne (DE); expecting 100 participants from finance, industry and the start-up scene
At the day after the conference, the separate “Bio-based Start-up Day” will take place at the same venue for the first time, where eleven start-ups will introduce themselves to players from industry and finance. Additionally, experts from i2i (DE/USA), nova-Institute (DE), OECD (FR) and ZENIT (DE) will give valuable tips to start-ups and the B.R.A.I.N. AG (DE), a leading European biotechnology company will report on their track from a start-up to the recent stock market launch. The breaks will facilitate effective networking between start-ups on one side and industry and finances on the other side.

Both events have been prepared in terms of content, programme and speakers by Florence Aeschelmann, expert for bio-based polymers at nova-Institute’s department “Technology & Markets”. We would like to use this opportunity to introduce Florence Aeschelmann in this month’s newsletter.
A little tidbit at the end: For the first time, comprehensive data is available about the European bioeconomy! nova-Institute has prepared and analysed data about turnover and employment in all sectors of the bioeconomy in a study carried out for the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). The complete bioeconomy (EU-28) created a turnover of 2.1 trillion € and 18.3 Mio. working places in 2013. When excluding primary production from the numbers, as well as the food and feed section, the energetic and material usage of biomass still created a turnover of 600 billion € and jobs for 3.2 Mio. employees. About 12% of the organic raw materials used by the European chemical industry was provided by biomass in 2013. Bio-based Plastics & Composites
Having graduated in 2013 from a French engineering school in material science, Florence Aeschelmann joined nova’s team as scientific staff in the department Technology & Markets in 2014. Her main focus is on bio-based materials, especially bio-based polymers.

Top 6 Candidates for “Bio-based Material of the Year 2016” nominated

For the ninth year in a row, the Innovation Award “Bio-based Material of the Year” will be awarded to the young, innovative bio-based material industry, finding suitable applications and markets for bio-based products. The competition focuses on new developments in these areas, which have had (or will have) a market launch in 2015 or 2016. The winners will be elected at the International Conference on Bio-based Materials.

Boost for European hemp cultivation through increasing demand for hemp products
Hemp cultivation areas in Europe will expand from 8,000 ha in 2011 to almost 25,000 ha in 2016, which shows a triple increase in 5 years. The reason is the growing demand for different raw materials obtained from this outstanding multi-purpose crop.

European Algae Roadmap Conference
6-8 April 2016, Real Marina Hotel, Olhão, Portugal
Leading research meets policy – join the conference now!
For two and a half days in April, top researchers and policy makers will meet in Olhão, Portugal, to present recent findings on the utilization of micro-algae for food additives, plastics or fuels. Algae have received a lot of interest from the political arena due to their ability to absorb huge amounts of CO2, being grown on non-arable land – therefore not posing any competition to food – and their ability to produce many interesting compounds usable for materials and for energy. The conference in Olhão will showcase several years of research conducted within seven EU-funded research projects on microalgae.

bioplastics MAGAZINE is organizing the 4th PLA World Congress
24 – 25 May 2016 in Munich, Germany
PLA is one of the bioplastics with the largest market significance. The versatile biobased plastic raw material is made almost completely from renewable resources. It is being used for packaging applications, for fibres in woven and non-woven applications. Even the automotive industry and consumer electronics are already applying PLA. Blending PLA with other bioplastics or other blend-partners as well as mixing it with natural fibres such as flax, hemp or kenaf broadens the range of applications even more.

Zudem geben Experten von i2i (DE/USA), nova-Institut (DE), OECD (FR) und ZENIT (DE) Start-ups wertvolle Tipps, die B.R.A.I.N. AG (DE), eines der führenden Biotechnologie-Unternehmen Europas, berichtet von ihrem Weg vom Start-up zum aktuellen Börsengang. In den Pausen werden gezielt Kontakte zwischen Start-ups und Industrie & Funding hergestellt.

Zum Schluss wieder Mal ein besonderes Schmankerl: Erstmalig gibt es umfassende Daten zur europäischen Bioökonomie! Das nova-Institut hat für das Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) Daten zum Umsatz und Beschäftigung in allen Sektoren der Bioökonomie vorgelegt. Die gesamte Bioökonomie kommt im Jahr 2013 (EU-28) auf 2,1 Billionen € Umsatz und 18,3 Mio. Arbeitsplätze. Zieht man die Primärproduktion sowie den Lebens- und Futtermittelbereich ab, so verbleiben für die energetische und stoffliche Nutzung von Biomasse 600 Mrd. € Umsatz und 3,2 Mio. Beschäftigte. Biomasse stellte etwa 12% der organischen Rohstoffe der europäischen chemischen Industrie im Jahr 2013. Kandidaten für Innovationspreis “bio-based Material of the Year 2016” stehen fest
5. – 6. April 2016, Maternushaus, Köln
Schon zum neunten Mal wird in diesem Jahr das “Bio-based Material of the Year“ gekürt. Der Innovationspreis richtet sich an die junge, innovative Biowerkstoff-Industrie. Ausgezeichnet werden neue bio-basierte Werkstoffe und ihre Anwendungen, die im Jahr 2015 oder 2016 am Markt eingeführt wurden bzw. werden. Welche der zahlreichen Einreichungen in die engere Auswahl gekommen sind steht jetzt fest. Die Sieger werden vom Fachpublikum der „International Conference on Bio-based Materials“gewählt, die am 5. und 6. April 2016 in Köln

Rückenwind für den europäischen Hanfanbau durch wachsende Nachfrage nach Hanfprodukten
Die Hanfanbauflächen in Europa werden sich von 8.000 ha im Jahr 2011 auf knapp 25,000 ha im Jahr 2016 ausdehnen, was einer Verdreifachung in weniger als fünf Jahren entspricht. Ursache ist die steigende Nachfrage nach verschiedenen Rohstoffen, die diese außergewöhnliche Mehrzweck-Pflanze liefert.
