Dr. Ángel Puente joined nova-Institute in 2017 and works across the Sustainability and Technology & Markets Departments. As an LCA expert with a PhD in Organic Chemistry, he supports companies and associations with high-quality ISO-compliant LCAs, methodological development for Renewable Carbon technologies, and Critical Reviews as both single reviewer and member of review panels. His unique combination of deep chemical understanding, analytical skills, and extensive LCA experience enables him to bridge scientific detail with strategic sustainability decision-making.
Background and Expertise
Ángel studied Chemistry and completed a master’s in Synthetic, Industrial and Applied Chemistry and earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry. His early research focused on green chemistry, organic catalysis in water-based systems, and mechanistic studies in physical organic chemistry. These strong scientific foundations now underpin his ability to understand production processes, analyse complex datasets, and critically assess methodological choices in LCA models.
Today, Ángel is a recognised expert for LCAs of Bio-based, CCU and Recycling systems. He supports industry players in navigating the methodological challenges specific to Renewable Carbon products — such as biogenic carbon accounting, land-use impacts, recycling loops, and carbon circularity — ensuring robust and credible sustainability results. He has extensive experience in the polymer, packaging, and chemical sectors, from early-stage technology assessment and data modelling to communication and review processes.
His work includes both project execution and methodological development, and he regularly contributes to European and international initiatives on Renewable and Circular economy topics.
Selected Contributions and Success Stories
- LCA of PEF and Renewable Packaging
Lead LCA expert for Avantium under the EU PEFerence project, producing several high-profile studies on the bio-based polymer PEF. Results are summarised in the publications “PEF – A Circular Bio-Based Plastic with Improved Properties and Environmental Performance”: https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/product/pef-a-circular-bio-based-plastic-with-improved-properties-and-environmental-performance-pdf/ and “PEF – A Sustainable Packaging Material for Bottles” : https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/product/pef-a-sustainable-packaging-material-for-bottles-pdf/ - Author of peer-reviewed scientific articles, including:

– Polymers (2025): The Opportunities and Challenges of Biobased Packaging Solutions. https://doi.org/10.3390/polym17162217
Methodological work on Renewable Carbon LCA
Contributor to the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) multi-report series on LCA of renewable carbon sources. His work includes the report “Renewable Carbon in Recycling Situations” (2025), which analyses methodological challenges of circular systems for renewable materials: https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/product/evaluating-lca-approaches-and-methodologies-for-renewable-carbon-sources-report-2-of-3-renewable-carbon-in-recycling-situations-march-2025-pdf/
Analysis of Background LCA Data and Market Implications
Lead author of the RCI study “Increased Methane Emissions in Crude Oil and Natural Gas Supply: Implications for the Carbon Footprint of Petrochemicals” (2025), providing critical insights into how updated emission factors for fossil feedstocks affect the benchmarking of renewable products: https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/product/increased-methane-emissions-in-crude-oil-and-natural-gas-supply-implications-for-the-carbon-footprint-of-petrochemicals-an-rci-report-pdf/
