New Acrylic/Biopolymer Alloys Surpass Performance of Traditional PMMA Products

The new technology is in keeping with Arkema's commitment to sustainability

In the transition from petro-derived polymers towards those with higher bio-content, material performance is often sacrificed. For instance, blending bio-based and conventional polymers often fail to significantly enhance material performance. Such approaches have limited opportunities especially in durable product applications.

In contrast, the newly developed Plexiglas® Rnew acrylic/biopolymer alloys from Altuglas International of Arkema Inc. are examples where the engineering of a standard petro-derived resin benefits from the incorporation of a biopolymer formulation. In fact, these materials, which contain at least 25% renewable carbon content, exhibit properties that often exceed the performance of engineering resins, including acrylic or biopolymer components alone. In particular, impact properties, chemical resistance, and processability are significantly enhanced.

In a presentation at the BioPlastek 2012 Forum, Arkema will be introducing this technology, based on the design of acrylic/biopolymer formulations that can be custom tailored for a wide variety of applications. The Forum will take place on March 28-30, 2012, at the Westin Arlington Gateway, in Arlington, Virginia, USA (near Washington, DC).

Offering exceptional performance for transparent and opaque durable goods, the new blends from Arkema are targeting medical, transportation, building and construction, and consumer applications. The new technology is in keeping with Arkema’s commitment to sustainability.

In addition to the presentation to be given by Arkema in the session on Advances in “New-to-the-World” Bioplastics for Durables, there will be opportunities to learn more about the new high performance acrylic/biopolymer alloys by visiting the company’s display table at the BioPlastek 2012 table top exhibition. Arkema, as a sponsor, is also hosting the luncheon on March 29th.
