A recent study published by Wageningen University for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs considered the development of the bio-based economy in the north of the Netherlands and suggested that the region had huge potential.
According to the report – entitled Noord4Bio – it could become a large-scale producer of green chemicals, plastics and cattle feed protein, and cement its position as “a player of world stature, which means a unique position for the Netherlands and Europe”.
The three northern provinces benefit from robust sea ports, a chemicals and plastics cluster, and well-developed arable farming with plenty of scope for expansion and cattle farming.
Future success would be dependent on close collaboration, knowledge-sharing and support from companies that wanted to take ownership of the opportunities, it said.
