Malaysia’s exports of oleochemical production declined by 16% between 2000 & 2001 according to Primary Industries Minister Lim Keng Yaik. Over the same period, exports to China increased by an extraordinary rate of 50%. Malaysia exports about 80% of its production of oleochemicals, the balance being consumed domestically. Europe remains the biggest market with 36%, followed by the USA (13%), Japan & China being next with 11% each. We estimate that current nameplate capacity in Malaysia for the splitting and interesterification of triglycerides is about 1,85 million mt pa.
