Greenyl uses SKYPET® from SK Chemicals from ALBIS Portfolio for sustainable vinyl records

By choosing a material that is not only recyclable but also already contains a chemically recycled content, Greenyl is making a contribution to the circular economy

ALBIS and Greenyl, an Italian manufacturer of sustainable “vinyl”, have worked closely together to develop an answer to the growing demand for eco-friendly solutions in the record industry. By using a SKYPET® CR grade from ALBIS’ partner SK Chemicals, Greenyl has already been able to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its records. By choosing a material that is not only recyclable but also already contains a chemically recycled content, Greenyl is also making a contribution to the circular economy.

To counteract the high environmental impact from traditional production with pressed PVC, the Milan-based company was searching for a more sustainable solution suitable for its innovative and resource-saving process. ALBIS assisted in the choice from its sustainable portfolio, which fell on a SKYPET® CR type from its trusted partner SK Chemicals.

Containing up to 99 percent chemically recycled PET waste, the use of SKYPET® CR results in a significant saving of 7.1kg CO2e/kg compared to PVC. A sustainable drop-in solution because the material used also strengthens the circular economy beyond the end of the product’s life: Greenyl’s SKYPET® made records therefore can also be fully recycled and reused.

“The solution ALBIS provided allows us to take another step on our sustainability journey without compromising any technical requirements of the manufacturing process”, says Luca Terenzi CEO and Production Manager at Greenyl. “Our choice to use material that is both recyclable and already recycled clearly demonstrates how the material loop can be closed with the right ambition.”

“SKYPET® CR even enables hard-to-recycle plastic waste to be returned to the material stream, resulting in an overall higher recycling rate as well as a reduced dependency and use of emission-intensive material”, says Stephan Schoen, Senior Director Product Management at ALBIS. “We are glad to have supported Greenyl in their choice of a material that shows how specific requirements and ambitious sustainability goals are not by any means mutually exclusive.”

ALBIS will display the Greenyl vinyl records at this year’s Fakuma in Hall B4 from October 17 to 21, 2023.

About Greenyl

Greenyl is an acronym which stands for Green “Vinyl”, an innovative and ecological record, eco-friendly record. The process of producing Greenyl records widely differs from traditional vinyl records. The records are made through an innovative, completely automatic production process, powered by renewable energy, in order to sustainable protect the environment. Therefore Greenyl is produced in a completely different way from traditional vinyl. Moreover, the new production plant allows a faster turnaround for delivery, considerably improving fabrication timing. Old pressing plants still use intensive steam boilers and a toxic brew of chemicals to manufacture records, which may result in a high dispersion of toxic substances into the environment. With the traditional production system, vinyl produces 12 times more toxic emissions than other physical music media. If the growth of vinyl sales continues, the negative impact on the environment, caused by the traditional vinyl manufacturing, will be massive. Greenyl is going to change the music industry for good and make it more sustainable.
