European Commission Officially Recognised ISCC EU for the Certification of RFNBOs, RCFs and Forest Biomass

In September 2024, the ISCC received the positive technical assessment from the European Commission for its ISCC EU certification approach for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin and Recycled Carbon Fuels

Fantastic news comes at the end of 2024! ISCC EU has officially been recognised by the European Commission (EC) for the certification of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs), Recycled Carbon Fuels (RFCs) and forest biomass. The EC published the Commission  Implementing  Decision (EU) 2024/3176  in the  Official Journal  of the European Union on 19 December 2024.

Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) and Recycled Carbon Fuels (RFCs)

In July 2024 the Danish Energy Agency pre-recognised the ISCC EU certification approach for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin. As a result, the first ISCC RFNBO certificate was issued in Denmark. In September 2024, ISCC received the positive technical assessment from the European Commission for its ISCC EU certification approach for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin and Recycled Carbon Fuels. Following this, the German Environment Agency (UBA) pre-recognised ISCC EU for RFNBO production in November 2024, enabling early certification of RFNBOs in the German market.

As of 19 December, official certification for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) and Recycled Carbon Fuels (RCFs) is now possible under ISCC EU. To certify RFNBOs and RCFs under ISCC EU, compliance with the following documents is required:

  • ISCC EU 202-6 RFNBOs and RCF
  • ISCC EU-205-1 RFNBOs RCF GHG Emissions

Forest Biomass

ISCC received a positive technical assessment for the ISCC EU certification approach for forest biomass from the European Commission in February 2024, and certification of the eligible materials is now possible as of 19 December 2024. To certify forest biomass under ISCC EU, compliance with the following documents is required:

  • ISCC EU 202-3 Forest Biomass: ISCC Principle 1
  •  ISCC EU 202-4 Forest Biomass: ISCC Principles 2-6
