EU takes Luxemburg, Italy, Portugal to court over biofuels laws

BRUSSELS (AFX) – The European Commission said it is taking Luxemburg, Italy and Portugal to the European Court of Justice for failing to transpose EU laws on biofuels into domestic law.

Under the EU rules, 5.75 pct of diesel and gasoline sold in the EU by 2010 has to be biofuels.

The commission said it has also sent a reasoned opinion to Slovakia on the same issue.

Reasoned opinions are a final warning to member states before the commission takes legal action at the EU’s highest court.

In addition, the EU executive has sent letters of formal notice to 16 member states for failing to submit national reports on the sector.
