EU sorbitol producers

The ASPEC (Association of Sorbitol Producers within the EC) has major concerns over European Union legislation promoting the use of biofuels in the transport sector, through reduction/exemption of excise duties that indirectly subsidises glycerine. Mandatory or indicative national targets for the share of biofuels could easily lead to massive quantities of glycerine, which directly competes with sorbitol for a number of applications. The objective of the Commission is to increase substitution of fossil diesel oil by biodiesel from 2% in 2005 to 5.75% in 2010. This would result in 240.000 mt of glycerine rising to 700.000 mt in 2010. ASPEC strongly urges vigilance on the part of the EU to avoid competition from indirectly subsided glycerine, as this could have serious consequences for both the traditional glycerine and sorbitol markets.
