The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a report suggesting that biodiesel use can reduce emissions of particulate matter by 47%when compared to petroleum diesel in unmodified diesel engines. The report, a compilation of 39 separate studies, shows a 67% reduction in unburned hydrocarbons and a 48% reduction in carbon monoxide with pure biodiesel.
Moreover, according to the US National Biodiesel Board, new diesel after-treatment technology will be capable of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 90% in the near future.
