Croda investing in 100% sustainable non-ionic surfactants by consuming bio-ethanol

Significant investment at its Atlas Point manufacturing site in Delaware, North America

Croda International Plc, manufacturers of speciality chemical ingredients that enhance everyday consumer and industrial products, today announced its plans to make a significant investment at its Atlas Point manufacturing site in Delaware, North America that will enable the site to produce 100% sustainable non-ionic surfactants.

Derived exclusively from plant materials, these bio-based ingredients will be the first of their kind to be made in North America and will mark the arrival of the widest range of 100% sustainable non-ionic surfactants on the market, due to the size of Croda’s portfolio and the scale of the global customers and markets it serves.

Croda’s heritage and growth strategy has a strong focus on investment in sustainable and innovative technologies. This latest project will enable manufacture at Atlas Point to move away from petrochemical ethylene as a new manufacturing plant will be built on site, consuming bio-ethanol. This will see the Business reduce its use of fossil fuels and be at the forefront of securing sustainable manufacturing of non-ionic surfactants in North America in the long term. In doing so, Croda makes another step change in meeting the needs of its customers who are also on a journey to deliver more sustainable products to their consumers.

Steve Foots, Chief Executive of Croda, said: “This is a significant and exciting investment that offers many new niche opportunities across all of our core markets for our customers to exploit. Our long history and expertise in the manufacture of speciality non-ionic surfactants means that through this innovative technology, we further align with our customers by taking a proactive, leading position in enabling them to meet their goals to deliver sustainable high performance products to their consumers.

“This investment has been led by our commitment to put sustainability and innovation at the heart of what we do. It will enable us to enhance our leading position amongst businesses of our kind, where uniquely around 70% of the raw materials we use come from renewable sources. This strategy has seen us ranked highly in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.”

Croda will be building the manufacturing assets to deliver these innovative ingredients over the next two years, bringing building contractor jobs to the Atlas Point site and permanent positions once the facility is operational in 2017. Whilst the new plant is being commissioned, Atlas Point will continue as one of Croda’s main manufacturing sites for non-ionic surfactants.
