Composites Evolution’s Biotex Flax used to create sustainable flax fairing for motorbikes

C-Tech, SHD Composites promoting sustainability in motorsport

C-Tech Composites has created flax fairing parts for motorbikes using Biotex Flax epoxy prepreg supplied by SHD Composites.

CTech200C-Tech Composites, a UK-based producer and designer of motorcycle bodywork discovered Composites Evolution’s range of flax reinforcements during the Composites Engineering show in Birmingham, UK. Excited by the possibilities of the material, C-Tech discussed with staff at the stand the various possibilities of the natural reinforcements.

After initial contact, and with the understanding that Biotex Flax has been used successfully in a variety of applications, C-Tech then approached SHD Composites to help them to test the material. Composites Evolution supplied SHD with its Biotex Flax material, which was then impregnated with epoxy resin at SHD Composites’ Sleaford, UK facilities.

C-Tech then cut and laminated the prepreg into the appropriate shape, using an autoclave system to mould and cure the part. The completed part is light and has good flex, with an impressive surface finish.

Brendon Weager, Technical Director at Composites Evolution, commented “By working with SHD who are experts in prepregging flax, C-Tech are manufacturing high performance, high quality parts from Biotex Flax, and promoting sustainability in motorsport, and we’re delighted to be a part of this exciting project.”

A flax fairing will be on show at the Composites Engineering show 11-12th November, NEC Birmingham at stand F135.
