China: Hemp fibres for textiles

National Hemp Industry Meet ends in Beijing

National Hemp Industry Meeting ended on December 10 in Beijing. Experts who attended the meeting discussed about development of hemp industry.

Experts stressed on development based on technical upgradation and merging hemp agriculture and hemp industry.

According to them, Government should improve raw material quality, pace up technical upgradation and to introduce new technology.

China cultivates 0.797 million hectares of hemp and its fibre processing output is around 0.6 million tons which is 10 percent of cotton fibre processing output.

For next five years, hemp fibre processing output is expected to reach 1.5 million tons and its consumption will reach 20 percent of cotton fibre consumption.

nova-comment: The given data are surprising, many natural fibre experts estimate a hemp cultivation area in China only between 50,000 – 100,000 ha. Later we realized that the reason was translation failure. The mentioned production volumes are for ALL BAST FIBRES, incl. flax, hemp, jute, kenaf …). (Michael Karus)
