The Chenna Baree Ortho-Natural Insole, a project of the School of Unusual Arts, is a proprietary molded insole made to compete on comfort and be better for the environment. The technology uses proprietary forms and processes to mold different densities of felt together with natural rubber and jute fiber. The result is an all-natural product with superior breathability, custom moldability, and anti-bacterial properties.

“And the best part,” says the designer Paul Kasdan “is that they are made here in Canada, with complete control over quality and production.”

Kasdan is a veteran of the shoe and orthopedics industry. He opened his first shop in 1979 and his first orthopedic business in 1986. He is passionate about a lot of things including the environment and local manufacturing. Having made thousands of custom orthotic insoles, he now wants to compete with the off the shelf insole market. “The off the shelf insole market is completely dominated by products which are made overseas out of inexpensive plastics. I want to produce a superior product from high quality natural materials, and I want to do the manufacturing here. I know there is a big market for this product. Just go to any drugstore, ski shop or high-end hiking outfitter and see the kinds of insoles they sell. People need comfortable insoles, and Chenna Baree Ortho-Natural insoles are much higher quality at a competitive price. My plan is to be on the shelves with key retail partners within 18 months.”

The project is being introduced on Kickstarter where people can find more detailed information and communicate with the designer. Click here for more information.
