More and more stakeholders are interested in Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies, a fast-moving, industry-driven innovation area. In the last twelve months alone, numerous companies showed their interest in getting involved in this field and several pilot, demonstration and even commercial plants have been planned and built. In addition, the political framework conditions for CCU have improved considerably in recent months: The new version of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), which will take effect in 2020, opens the door for all CO2 uses, including the utilization of industrial exhaust gases for all types of fuels. There are also discussions at the highest political level in the Emission Trading System (ETS) about recognising CO2 use. Great visions become true potential!
While first commercial production of CO2-based polymers has been launched already some years ago, additional options are now in play. Several technologies have progressed far enough to allow the production of chemicals and fuels on an industrial scale in the near future – with advanced biotechnology and chemical catalysis. At the same time, renewable energy from solar, wind and hydro power becomes cheaper and more efficient each year. The newest plants, at favourable locations, produce already at the same or even lower price levels as fossil energy sources. A perfect situation for combining cheap and abundant renewables with carbon utilization to store energy and produce renewable fuels and chemicals. Renewable energy and CCU will have large impacts on the energy system of the future and the chemical industry, too.
At the 7th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers, leading players will showcase enhanced and new applications using CO2 as feedstock. The main topics of the conference are the new political framework, renewable energy and hydrogen production, artificial photosynthesis, carbon capture technologies, CO2-based fuels for transport and aviation, chemicals and polymers as well as mineralisation and proteins.
As in previous years, experts from the nova-Institute will invite the most outstanding companies and institutes to bring the participants up-to-date on the latest CCU technologies and their implementation. The conference will also highlight the leading trends for the next ten years – particularly in view of the improved political conditions.
