BIOPAR® was presented with product Differentiation Excellence Award

Frost & Sullivan honours BIOP Biopolymer Technologies

The 2011 Frost & Sullivan European Product Differentiation Excellence Award in the Starch Polymers Market is presented to BIOP Biopolymer Technologies AG (BIOP Biopolymer Technologies) for BIOPAR®. A cutting-edge, starch-based, bio-plastic polymer, BIOPAR® is produced through a proprietary technology developed by BIOP Biopolymer Technologies and finds widespread application in the food and agriculture industries.

BIOPAR® is multilayered and biphasic, unlike commonly used polymers that are disperse. As a result, it can hold more starch which adds value to its biodegrability and thus reduces the quantity of synthetic material being used in the polymer. This technology platform offers customers the prospect of nearly 100.0 per cent renewable content based on requirements.

“BIOPAR®’s highly advanced features enable it to cater to its target market needs effectively,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sujatha Vijayan. “Its high water vapour rate and gas barrier properties are superior to that of existing biopolymers, providing it with the ability to replace polyethylene in several applications.”

Another notable advantage is that the same conventional production lines and equipment meant for fossil-based polymers can be used for the processing of BIOPAR® as well. In addition, the processing of BIOPAR® requires lower levels of energy input as compared to conventional petroleum-based plastics, enabling considerable energy and cost savings for processors and end-users.

BIOPAR® consists of aliphatic copolyesters, starch and a patented/proprietary compatibilizer that enables the conversion of the starch into a polymer. The compatibilizer allows the starch polymer to be in a bi-continuous phase with the polyester.

This feature presents a significant difference from other existing starch polymers. The starch extraction method is a one step process that entails a reactive extrusion process, which changes the starch into polymer.

“The uniqueness of this bi-continuous phase polymer allows its use in the manufacture of highly transparent films with low gas permeation,” explains Vijayan. “The bi-continuous phase process technology is highly advanced and offers several benefits that accrue from low operating and investment costs besides being an environmentally clean and secure operation.”

The technology platform behind BIOPAR® can be used to tailor the polymer to meet varied end-user needs in food packaging, consumer plastics, landscape gardening and agriculture. It also has the potential to be used in new applications such as caps, closures, shopping bags, automobile parts and interiors.

“Since its launch in November 2002, the technology behind BIOPAR® has been making a mark for the company due to its advanced features and superior properties,” concludes Vijayan. “It has gained a strong brand perception in the market as a unique starch-based biodegradable polymer that offers a number of distinct advantages to customers.”

The Product Differentiation Excellence Award is presented to the company that has excelled in the following criteria: unique features/functionality, quality, customisation, matched to target markets needs and brand perception of the uniqueness of the product.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
