BIOFOREVER Workshop: In-Depth B2C Market Research and GreenPremium

16 May, 2019, Maternushaus, Cologne, Germany. Part of the 12th International Conference on Bio-based Materials

In the framework of the European research project BIOFOREVER (https://bioforever.org), nova-Institute and “september Strategie & Forschung”, one of Germany’s market leaders in deep psychological market research, have conducted an in-depth study on consumers’ perceptions on bio-based products. At this workshop, the research methodology and main results will be presented and discussed with interested stakeholders.

Find out more about consumer attitudes towards bio-based products and different raw materials.
Find out more about consumer attitudes towards bio-based products and different raw materials.

Which materials and products do consumers expect in the future? For which applications will they prefer bio-based products? Do consumers make a difference between first and second-generation biomass feedstock for bio-based products?
These and other questions keep industry and policy makers busy. Their answers will have great influence on how the European bioeconomy will be shaped in the next decades.

Many quantitative and semi-quantitative studies have been carried out over the last few years, but the picture is still not quite clear. Thanks to the in-depth consumer research by september combined with nova-Instiute’s expertise in bio-based products and markets, it is now possible to look behind the scenes of buying behaviour and find connections that remain hidden in online surveys.

For the research project BIOFOREVER, 60 in-depth interviews of 90 minutes each were conducted and evaluated in Poland, Germany and Italy in the summer of 2018. Results revealed a very low level of knowledge about bio-based products and plastics in general. Several interview partners were not at all aware of plastic being made out of crude oil or the possibility to make plastics from plants. The transformation from liquid mineral oil to solid plastic works like a miracle. Chemistry is “toxic magic”. In this way, the properties of the raw materials are transferred directly to the end products in consumers’ minds. Wood is hard, resistant and durable; analogously it should only be used to make hard, resistant and long-living products.
