Bio-on and Rivoira give life to Zeropack the new sustainable and biodegradable products for the packaging of the fruit and vegetable

New technology involves the use of agricultural wastes as a carbon source for the production of bioplastic, fully organic and 100% biodegradable

  • Zeropack is born, the Newco created by Bio-on, and that will be participated by Rivoira, is dedicated to the development of a revolutionary technology for the production of sustainable and totally biodegradable packaging for fruits and vegetables.
  • Result of 4 years of research activities by Bio-on scientists operating in Italy and USA, the new technology involves the use of agricultural wastes as a carbon source for the production of bioplastic, fully organic and 100%biodegradable.
  • Worldwide distribution bans the plastic obtained from O&G. Zeropack revolutionizes the world of materials for fruit packaging without changing people’s habits and fully respond to the new needs of the small and large distribution.

Bio-on, leader in the high-quality bioplastic sector and Rivoira Group, one of the worldwide leading companies in fruit production and distribution, have reached an agreement to participate together, respectively with the 50%, in Zeropack, the new company founded by Bio-on with the aim of revolutionizing the production of the fruit and vegetable packaging through PHAs biopolymers.

The worldwide rise in plastic waste mainly generated by food and beverage packaging has involved a great deal of actions and strategies aimed at minimising the different negative impacts of the increasing production and consumption of polymer materials obtained from Oil&Gas.

These are also due to the growing pressure on food and water supplies, raw materials availability, climate change mitigation, and healthcare, as well as the increased focus on more sustainable products.

Despite the efforts that have been made in the last decades, overall plastic waste volumes are tremendously growing around the world: actual and foreseen management of plastics waste remains a huge worldwide problem. The seriousness of the global challenge regarding potential climate crisis is not yet sufficiently widely understood.

Substitution of the petrol sources by bio-based and naturally biodegradable materials such as Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) appears as the most promising strategy and a long-term opportunity for reducing the environmental impact of the plastic waste contributing to improve carbon footprint.

ZEROPACK develops cost-effective and eco-innovative materials for vegetable and fruit packaging in order to contribute to plastic-waste reduction and improving overall environmental sustainability.

All applications observe and respect the highest level of standardization and certification.
