Avantium and Rhodia to Develop Biobased Polyamides

Avantium and Rhodia, which is part of the Solvay Group, have announced that they will jointly develop bio based polyamides for various applications. This partnership is an extension of a joint partnership previously announced by the two companies to develop bio based engineering plastics. The partnership will make use of the YXY technology from Avantium to develop a wide range of compositions and applications in the polyamide field.

Both the companies will jointly investigate the market potential for polyamide compositions on the YXY building blocks. The polyamides, which are made from renewable and bio based feedstock, are expected to display desirable properties such as high environmental compatibility, performance and cost effectiveness. Rhodia will test the polyamides in applications such as electronics, automobiles and consumer goods. Both companies will enter into an exclusive collaboration for the commercialisation of the new polyamides.
