And the Winners are: CeraSleeve, ElementarHy und Primogene

Seit 2019 gibt es den CHEManager Innovation Pitch, die Start-up-Förderinitiative von CHEManager. Im letzten Jahr haben wir, unterstützt von unseren Sponsoren Brenntag, Siemens und Ruhr-IP, 18 Start-ups mit ihren Ideen präsentiert – elf in den deutschsprachigen CHEIm vergangenen Jahr waren Start-ups aus Deutschland, der Schweiz, Kanada und den Niederlanden vertreten. Auch wenn die meisten Start-ups ihren Sitz in Deutschland haben, ist die Internationalität der Gründerteams dennoch hoch. Das spricht für die Attraktivität der akademischen Institutionen hierzulande, denn die meisten Start-ups sind Spin-offs von Universitäten.

Die Themen reichten von Biotechnologie über Synthesechemie und Materialentwicklung, bis hin zu Energie- und Prozesstechnik. Dabei waren die drei Megatrends Nachhaltigkeit, Kreislaufwirtschaft, Digitalisierung und Transformation als Treiber von Innovationen allgegenwärtig.

In der Kategorie “Value to Sustainability” siegte CeraSleeve aus Darmstadt vor dem Viernheimer Start-up Curenergy und Ucaneo Biotech aus Berlin. CeraSleeve entwickelt ein Papieradditiv, das herkömmliche Nassfest-, und Leimungsmittel durch ein nachhaltiges Material ersetzt. Dabei nutzt das Team eine hauchdünne Schicht aus Silica, um Papier reißfest und wasserbeständig zu machen. Die patentierte Technologie ermöglicht eine echte Kreislaufwirtschaft, bei der das Papier vollständig wiederverwertet werden kann.

Sieger in der Kategorie “Value to Society” wurde Primogene mit knappem Vorsprung vor CeraSleeveund Ucaneo Biotech, die auch in dieser Kategorie punkten konnten. Primogene ist ein innovatives Biotechnologieunternehmen mit Sitz in Leipzig, das sich auf die Entwicklung biotechnologischer Herstellungsverfahren für bioaktive Inhaltsstoffe spezialisiert hat. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf human-identischen Verbindungen, die Gesundheit in allen Lebensphasen fördern.

In der Kategorie “Value to Industry” setzte sich ElementarHy aus Hamburg deutlich gegen C4Valueaus Mülheim an der Ruhr und Biosimo aus Schlieren in der Schweiz durch. ElementarHy nutzt eine revolutionäre Plasmatechnologie und positioniert sich damit als führender Anbieter von kostengünstigen und skalierbaren Membran-Elektroden-Einheiten für Elektrolyseurhersteller. Wir entwickeln, produzieren und recyceln kundenorientierte MEAs, minimieren dabei den Einsatz kritischer Rohstoffe (-95 %) und liefern herausragende Leistung und erstklassige Qualität.

CeraSleeve erhielt insgesamt über alle Kategorien die meisten Stimmen, gefolgt von Ucaneo Biotech, C4Value und Biosimo. Auch wenn letztlich nur drei Start-ups als Jahressieger ausgezeichnet werden, können sich doch alle 18 Unternehmen, die sich beim CHEManager Innovation Pitch 2025 einem großen Publikum präsentieren durften, als Gewinner fühlen.

Der Expertenjury gehörten an: Tanja Bendele (Ruhr-IP Patentanwälte), Axel Paix (Brenntag), Nicky Ahnert (Siemens), Holger Bengs (BCNP Consultants), sowie Jörg Wetterau (Labor für Kommunikation) und Volker Oestreich (Dr. Oestreich Consulting). Moderiert wurde die Jurysitzung von Christene Smith und Michael Reubold (CHEManager).

Neben einer Urkunde und einer Trophäe von CHEManager für drei Gewinner ermöglicht BCNP Consultants den siegreichen Start-ups, sich Anfang Februar beim 10th ECP in Frankfurt zu präsentieren und wertvolle Kontakte zu Unternehmen und Investoren zu knüpfen.

Wir werden die Entwicklung der Start-ups weiter verfolgen und u.a. in unserer CHEManager-Serie „Leuchttürme der Start-up-Szene“ über ihre Erfolgsgeschichten berichten.

Last year, start-ups from Germany, Switzerland, Canada and the Netherlands were represented. Even though most of the start-ups are based in Germany, the internationality of the founding teams is still high. This speaks for the attractiveness of academic institutions in this country, as most start-ups are spin-offs from universities.

The topics ranged from biotechnology, synthesis chemistry and material development to energy and process technology. The three mega trends of sustainability, circular economy, digitalization and transformation were omnipresent as drivers of innovation.

In the “Value to Sustainability” category, CeraSleeve from Darmstadt won ahead of the Viernheim-based start-up Curenergy, and Ucaneo Biotech from Berlin. CeraSleeve is developing a paper additive that replaces conventional wet strength and sizing agents with a sustainable material. The team uses a wafer-thin layer of silica to make paper tear-resistant and water-resistant. The patented technology enables a genuine circular economy in which the paper can be fully recycled.

The winner in the “Value to Society” category was Primogene, with a narrow lead over CeraSleeveand Ucaneo Biotech, who also scored highly in this category. Primogene is an innovative biotechnology company based in Leipzig that specializes in the development of biotechnological production processes for bioactive ingredients. The focus is on human-identical compounds that promote health in all phases of life.

In the “Value to Industry” category, ElementarHy from Hamburg clearly beat C4Value from Mülheim an der Ruhr, and Biosimo from Schlieren in Switzerland. ElementarHy uses a revolutionary plasma technology and has positioned itself as a leading provider of cost-effective and scalable membrane electrode units for electrolyser manufacturers. We develop, produce and recycle customized MEAs, minimizing the use of critical raw materials (-95%) and delivering outstanding performance and first-class quality.

CeraSleeve received the most votes across all categories, followed by Ucaneo Biotech, C4Value, and Biosimo. Even though only three start-ups were ultimately recognized as annual winners, all 18 companies that were able to present themselves to a large audience at the CHEManager Innovation Pitch 2025 can still feel like winners.

In addition to a certificate and a trophy from CHEManager for three winners, BCNP Consultants will enable the winning start-ups to present themselves at the 10th ECP in Frankfurt at the beginning of February and make valuable contacts with companies and investors.
