European Energy and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. secure OMV as new offtaker for Kassø e-methanol facility

Multi-year agreement with OMV adds another major industrial customer for e-methanol from the Kassø facility in Denmark

  • European Energy and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., through their joint venture Solar Park Kassø (SPK), have signed a multi-year agreement with OMV for the offtake of e-methanol from the Kassø facility.
  • The agreement is the fourth publicly announced long-term offtake agreement for e-methanol produced at Kassø.
  • The e-methanol supplied to OMV will meet EU requirements for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).

European Energy and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. have signed, through their joint venture Solar Park Kassø (SPK), a multi-year offtake agreement with OMV for renewable e-methanol produced at the Kassø e-methanol facility in Aabenraa, Denmark.

The agreement adds one of Europe’s major integrated energy, fuels and chemicals companies to the growing group of industrial companies sourcing e-methanol from Kassø.

The e-methanol supplied under the agreement will be EU-certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). The agreement includes requirements for greenhouse gas emissions savings significantly above the minimum threshold for RFNBO compliance, demonstrating Kassø’s ability to supply renewable fuels with a substantially lower carbon footprint than their fossil-based alternatives and in compliance with the newly implemented third European renewable energy directive (RED III) for road transport in several European countries.

For Kassø, the agreement is another important commercial validation. We have proven that e-methanol can be produced on an industrial scale. The next step is building a broad and diversified customer base, and adding a company of OMV’s scale and industrial experience is a strong contribution to that development,”  said René Alcaraz Frederiksen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X in European Energy.

It demonstrates that e-methanol is evolving into a practical low-carbon solution across a broad range of industries. In addition to marine fuel and chemical applications, demand is now emerging in the transportation fuel sector, reflecting the growing recognition of e-methanol as a viable pathway to decarbonization. We believe e-methanol can provide customers with a realistic and scalable option to reduce emissions while leveraging existing infrastructure and supply chains,” said Tadaaki Ito, General Manager for Methanol and Ammonia Division in Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

With the first delivery of e-methanol to OMV completed, the agreement is already being implemented

This is the fourth publicly announced offtake agreement connected to the Kassø e-methanol facility –  following agreements with A.P. Moller – Maersk, the LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk – Which together demonstrate demand for e-methanol across several industries and applications.

The Kassø e-methanol facility was inaugurated in May 2025 and has an annual production capacity of 42,000 tonnes. Located next to the 304 MW Kassø Solar Park, the facility combines renewable electricity with biogenic CO₂ to produce e-methanol.

The facility represents the first commercial-scale e-methanol production of its kind and provides industrial customers with access to a renewable alternative to fossil-based methanol. Its combination of renewable electricity, biogenic CO₂ and industrial-scale production demonstrates how Power-to-X can connect renewable energy production with sectors where direct electrification is difficult.
