Primient Covation, LLC, a leading producer of 100% bio-based 1,3 propanediol, has launched new hair color formulations featuring Zemea propanediol. Developed in collaboration with Sensient’s Arianor water-soluble basic cationic dyes, these formulations aim to deliver effective results while addressing sustainability and scalp health.
Performance Enhancements in Hair Color
Four developer-free, semi-permanent hair color formulations were created using the Arianor dyes and tested under controlled lab conditions. According to Primient Covation, the study demonstrated that 3% Zemea propanediol improved the performance of these formulations by enhancing:
- Ease of application
- Color evenness,
- Saturation and
- Wash fastness, compared with control formulas and those using propylene glycol.
Marjorie Morris, global marketing manager of Zemea, reported the material’s ability “to efficiently deposit dyes makes it a standout choice for ammonia-free formulas, helping you achieve vibrant, lasting results with less irritation — perfect for clients seeking gentle, high-performance color in both temporary and semi-permanent services.”
Natural Alternative to Traditional Ingredients
Zemea propanediol, a 100% plant-based alternative to petroleum-derived diols, is said to eliminate the need for ingredients like propylene glycol and ammonia, reducing environmental concerns. This additionally decreases the potential for skin irritation and supports the development of formulations with fewer harsh chemicals.
The material is designed to work across a range of hair color products, including semi-permanent and temporary colorants, color-depositing shampoos and shine-enhancing treatments.
