Foreword brief
The European Commission’s recent decision to withdraw the EU Green Claims Directive, citing concerns over complexity and administrative burdens, has created a degree of uncertainty regarding future environmental marketing standards. This move, however, contrasts with the ongoing public consultation for an updated EU Bioeconomy Strategy, which aims to strategically scale up biobased products, remove innovation barriers, and foster resource efficiency, underscoring the EU’s long-term commitment to a sustainable bio-based future. Specifically for the chemicals industry, the Cefic UNITY study has highlighted the significant challenges facing the European chemical industry’s circular transformation, including high costs and regulatory complexities, emphasizing the critical need for a comprehensive five-point action plan to support the integration of biobased technologies. This drive towards sustainability is equally pressing in the UK, where the chemicals industry is being urged to take immediate action, with new networks actively promoting a vital shift towards bio-derived feedstocks to meet ambitious decarbonization targets and secure the industry’s future.
