Exclusive interview with Vaude: A sustainably innovative outdoor outfitter

René Bethmann explains their shift from fossil-based materials to renewable carbon sources, including bio-based, CO2-based, and recycled materials

In an interview with René Bethmann (Senior Innovation Manager), he explains how VAUDE Sport & Co. KG, Germany has achieved climate-neutral production since 2022 and aims for a climate-neutral supply chain by 2030. René Bethmann explains their shift from fossil-based materials to renewable carbon sources, including bio-based, CO2-based, and recycled materials. He highlights the challenges in material availability and the need for new recycling processes and new waste collection streams which can handle complex multi-component textile products. 

VAUDE’s strategy includes ensuring the high quality of recycled products, developing repairable and recyclable designs, and collaborating on industry-wide recycling solutions. 

Participation in the Renewable Carbon Initiative supports VAUDE’s goals by providing a framework for reducing fossil feedstocks and promoting sustainable technologies.
