In more and more regions worldwide, politicians are now aiming to reduce the use of plastic bags. As Ontario Environment Minister Laurel Broten announced on May 9, the Canadian province intends to curtail plastic bag use by 50 percent during the next five years.
The plan includes an agreement among major retail organizations and the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA). According to Cathy Cirko, CPIA vice president of environment and health, Ontarians presently use close to 7 million bags per day. Other partners in the program include the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG) and the Retail Council of Canada (RCC).
