- Evaluated throughout the entire process from raw material purchase to sales; a highly reliable international certification to secure a foothold in the global marketplace
- Isosorbide, a 100% biomass material made from plant resources including corn; superior durability, heat resistance, and chemical resistance expected to expand the scope of application
On Dec. 11, Samyang Innochem (CEO: Kang Ho-sung), a chemical affiliate of Samyang Group, held a ceremony at the Samyang Group headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, to receive the “ISCC Plus” certification of isosorbide from Control Union, a global agency for the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC).
ISCC Plus is an international certification system for sustainable and low-carbon raw materials in accordance with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED). It was established by ISCC, an international organization with proven credibility in the field of eco-friendly certification. It is awarded after meticulous evaluation of the entire supply chain, from raw material purchase to production and sales.
Isosorbide, for which Samyang Innochem has received this certification, is a 100% biomass-based eco-friendly material produced by chemically processing starch extracted from plant resources such as corn. It can be used in the production of plastics and paints by replacing existing petrochemical materials, and Samyang Innochem is the only company in Korea producing it. Plastics made with isosorbide not only help reduce carbon emissions, but also have excellent transparency, durability, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and adhesion. They can also be used in various fields such as electronics, automotive interior and exterior materials, food containers, and building materials.
“This ISCC Plus certification paves the way for the global expansion of Isosorbide,” said Kang Ho-sung, CEO of Samyang Innochem. He added, “We will bolster the global expansion of isosorbide and continue to expand our eco-friendly specialty materials business by applying it to various products.”
Leveraging the excellent characteristics and properties of isosorbide, Samyang Group is actively engaged in product development. In 2022, Samyang Group developed and started mass production of an eco-friendly adhesive for EVs, and developed a high transmittance polycarbonate for automotive daytime running lights that improves light transmittance and reduces yellow index by applying a light transmittance enhancer using isosorbide. The group is also gradually expanding its application range by developing heat management materials for EV batteries.
