The authors of this report have carried out a comprehensive scientific evaluation of how the scientific literature defines „natural polymers“, and the result is: The European policy definition is partly in clear contrast to the scientific definitions.

„Occurring in nature“ is the basis for every definition of „natural polymers“ in the scientific literature and in policy. All scientific definitions include biotechnological processes for the production of natural polymers. Not a single definition mentions the place of polymerisation as a criterion – in clear contrast to European policy. Industrial practice confirms this finding: A long list of widely accepted natural polymers includes biotechnologically processed polymers and the place of polymerisation is not a criterion.

Conclusion: A policy definition of „natural polymers“ that is at odds with almost all scientific definitions and at odds with business reality, and which is a major barrier to innovation, green investment and lower carbon footprints, needs to be revised.
The essence of the scientific definitions evaluated in this report is simple and leads to the following proposed definition: „Natural polymers are those that occur in nature, are produced in and extracted from nature, or can be produced identically using biotechnological processes“.

DOI No.: https://doi.org/10.52548/UGBZ5516

[47,48,49
415
64
70,72
0":"post-251045","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-markets","7":"product_cat-policy","8":"product_cat-sustainability","9":"product_tag-24-09nova-paper","10":"renewable-carbon-bio-based","11":"publication-type-reports","12":"publication-type-nova-papers","14":"first","15":"instock","16":"downloadable","17":"virtual","18":"sold-individually","19":"product-type-simple
["https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-106x150.png",106,150,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-212x300.png",212,300,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false],"1536x1536":["https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false],"2048x2048":["https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-679x750.png",679,750,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-540x320.png",540,320,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-140x100.png",140,100,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-191x270.png",191,270,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-380x245.png",380,245,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop.png",679,960,false
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-200x200.png",200,200,true
https://renewable-carbon.eu/publications/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/24-09-26-Science-based-Definition-of-Natural-Polymers-shop-272x182.png",272,182,true
European policy has defined „natural polymers“ in a way that has caused much concern and debate among scientists and industry, and has created a barrier to innovation.
