Chic, Biodegradable Sunglasses

Tom Brady knows what he likes. Football’s winningest quarterback is as decisive off the field as he is on it, including when it comes to fashion. Brady’s tastes reflect an appreciation for classic menswear and his commitment to environmental issues. These priorities echo in the star’s latest endeavor, a collaboration with Danish sunglasses brand Christopher Cloos. The partnership, which began in 2020 and debuts its second round today, focuses on shades that look sleek while providing an extra layer of protection via blue light filters. Wearer’s benefit from the mindful designs, and so does Mother Nature. The unique, biodegradable frames mean that Brady’s glasses—which won’t be clogging up a landfill for the next hundred years, unlike the many plastic pairs currently in rotation.

Already a fan of sustainable fashion, Brady was impressed by founder Julius Langkilde’s expertise in the subject and his enthusiasm. “They had these great minimalist, timeless designs, but what attracted me was his passion,” shared Brady on the phone from Florida. “[Cloos] just felt like such a good fit and one suited to my style.” The new launches are inspired by some of Brady’s favorite places as well. The Cloos x Brady Hermosa, a classic broad rim frame with wire top-bar detailing, is named after the star’s favorite beach destination in Costa Rica. Cloos x Brady Pacifica, a two-tone pair with steel reinforcing, nods to his childhood home in San Matteo. Offered in various colors and lens hues, they reflect the multiformity that has come to define menswear in 2021. “Some men find that one thing that works, and they stick with it because it’s safe; others are much more exploratory,” explains Brady. “It’s just so much more acceptable these days for men to have fun and change depending on the activity they’re engaging in.”

Versatility was one part of the equation, but so was protection. Vigilant when it comes to health and fitness, Brady views sunglasses as an ounce of prevention against UV damage. Having moved to Tampa Bay from Boston upon signing with the Buccaneers last March, he’s had to adjust accordingly to the new climate. “I have worn more sunglasses in the last twelve months than I have in my entire life,” says Brady. “It’s sunny year-round, and then being out on the water—you need a great pair to protect your eyes from sun damage. Then when I’m indoors, I like having blue light glasses because I still do a lot of studying and preparation for football [which] can take a big toll on me. Those lenses have been a big part of my recovery and health.”

Eco-friendly eyewear is a relatively new concept, and most established brands still rely heavily on plastics and other synthetic materials. The Cloos x Brady collection is made from M49 Mazzucchelli, an Italian bioplastic composed of cellulose acetate that is 100% recyclable. According to the Center for Environmental Law, 99% plastic is made using chemicals sourced from fossil fuel. Alternatives like M49, which his made using wood that is harvested according to the guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council and surpasses the International Organization for Standardization’s guidelines on biodegradable materials, reduce greenhouse emissions.

For Brady, working with the team at Cloos, who have committed to making the brand’s entire product lineup biodegradable, offered the kind of flexibility that leads to innovation. “Sometimes, when you’re working with big companies, it’s hard for them to shift what they’re doing; it can be a bit like moving the Titanic,” says Brady. “To make an environmentally friendly frame and see what can be done was exciting. They’ve made every Cloos pair sustainable, which was important for me. It’s about finding the right resources and manufacturers to create products that won’t cause damage to the planet, and those sources have become more readily available. Because [Christopher Cloos] is a smaller company, they’ve been able to do this, but I hope that other companies also begin to adopt these kinds of methods.”

Equally passionate about environmental issues is Brady’s wife, supermodel and entrepreneur Gisele Bündchen. Brady credits her with raising his awareness. “[She is] a great mom, great friend, and an incredible woman with so much integrity. She holds our family to a high standard and always encourages me to live the same way and be conscious of so many different things that I wasn’t as aware of when I was younger,” he says. “She’s committed her time and energy to the environment and sustainability, and that has shaped our lives.” Naturally, Bündchen and the entire family have already taken a shine to the collection. “Oh, she loves it,” says Brady. “She’s always taking mine and wearing them around the house!”

Tom Brady knows what he likes.
