{"id":91490,"date":"2021-06-28T07:23:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T05:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=91490"},"modified":"2021-09-09T19:30:24","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T17:30:24","slug":"bacteria-serves-tasty-solution-to-plastic-crisis-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/bacteria-serves-tasty-solution-to-plastic-crisis-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Bacteria serves tasty solution to plastic crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><strong>Researchers have discovered that the common bacteria <em>E. coli<\/em> can be deployed as a sustainable way to\u00a0convert post-consumer plastic into vanillin, a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2021\/gc\/d1gc00931a#!divAbstract\" target=\"_blank\">new study reveals<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vanillin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanillin is the primary component of extracted vanilla beans and is responsible for the characteristic taste and smell of vanilla.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transformation could boost the circular economy, which aims to eliminate&nbsp;waste, keep products and materials in use&nbsp;and have positive impacts for synthetic biology, experts say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plastic crisis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s plastic crisis has seen an urgent need to develop new methods to recycle&nbsp;polyethylene terephthalate (PET)\u2013 the&nbsp;strong, lightweight&nbsp;plastic&nbsp;derived from non-renewable materials such as oil and gas and&nbsp;widely&nbsp;used&nbsp;for packaging foods and convenience-sized juices and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately 50 million tonnes of PET waste is produced annually, causing serious economic and environmental impacts. Credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To tackle this problem, scientists from the University of Edinburgh used lab engineered <em>E. coli<\/em> to transform terephthalic acid \u2013 a molecule derived from PET \u2013 into the high value compound vanillin, via\u00a0a series of chemical reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team also demonstrated how the technique works by converting a used plastic bottle into vanillin by adding the <em>E. coli<\/em> to the degraded plastic waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers say that the vanillin produced would be fit for human consumption but further experimental tests are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanillin is widely used in the food and cosmetics industries, as well as the formulation of herbicides, antifoaming agents and cleaning products. Global demand for vanillin was in excess of 37,000 tonnes in 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is the first example of using a biological system to upcycle plastic waste into a valuable industrial chemical and this has very exciting implications for the circular economy.
