{"id":76258,"date":"2020-06-29T07:44:38","date_gmt":"2020-06-29T05:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=76258"},"modified":"2020-07-20T10:14:42","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T08:14:42","slug":"tackling-europes-food-waste-problem-bio-based-industries-offer-innovative-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/tackling-europes-food-waste-problem-bio-based-industries-offer-innovative-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Tackling Europe\u2019s food waste problem \u2013 bio-based industries offer innovative solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), Europe\u2019s leading industry association putting circularity, innovation and sustainability at the heart of the European bioeconomy, has teamed up with Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) to produce a first-of-its-kind report identifying the untapped potential to valorise bio-waste (garden and food waste) in Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report details the current generation and capture rates of bio-waste for each EU27 Member State, plus Norway and the United Kingdom. For food waste, the current capture is only 9,520,091 tonnes per year,\u00a0 just 16% of the theoretical potential, estimated at 59,938,718 tonnes (see graph below).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76259\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76259\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76259 \" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/zwe_bic_biowaste_image_02-600x400.png\" alt=\"zwe_bic_biowaste_image_02-600x400\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2020\/06\/zwe_bic_biowaste_image_02-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2020\/06\/zwe_bic_biowaste_image_02-600x400-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison theoretical potential \/ currently collected (food waste and bio-waste)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The report and country factsheets provide examples of how the bio-based industries contribute to tackling this waste challenge as well as citing best practices in waste management at municipal level. Bio-waste can serve as a valuable feedstock for the bio-based industries and the sector is well-placed to convert bio-waste into high-value bio-based products. This innovation can alleviate Europe\u2019s food waste challenge and stimulate new opportunities for sustainable growth, contributing to Europe\u2019s green recovery.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe bio-based sector is already valorising bio-waste in smart and efficient processes with zero-waste objectives. Several projects funded by the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) demonstrate how innovation in our sector can convert bio-waste into high-value bio-based\u00a0 products.\u201d<\/em> says Dirk Carrez, BIC Executive Director. <em>\u201cThe bio-based industries seek to achieve a resource-efficient and zero-waste society as identified in our Vision. The planned EU public-private partnership \u2013 Circular bio-based Europe \u2013 will help further realise this\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe report shows that biowaste management remains an untapped potential for the European Union to further transition to a Circular Economy. Only 16% of the potential is currently captured and, through proper initiatives, this number could be multiplied by 5 so as to reach 85%.
