The Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Stef Blok said the Netherlands is not backing the European\u00a0Union\u00a0biofuel ban that\u00a0targets\u00a0Indonesia-produced crude palm oil (CPO).<\/p>\n
However, Blok asserts that this issue must not be dragged out any further and Indonesia must pursue a sustainable way of producing CPO.<\/p>\n
The foreign affairs minister said\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0in Den\u00a0Haag\u00a0that he is certain a sustainable palm oil production is the only way to overcome this dispute.<\/p>\n
As of last year, the European Union (EU) ratified an energy proposal that erases the use of biofuel sourced from palm oil. Indonesia took a major blow following the EU\u2019s stand on Indonesian-produced palm oil products.
\nIndonesia went\u00a0to the\u00a0World Trade Organization (WTO) upon\u00a0filing\u00a0a lawsuit against\u00a0the European Union on December 9, 2019. The WTO is currently seeking a solution to the trade dispute. Dutch\u2019s foreign affairs minister Stef Blok said he utterly regrets this process is ongoing.<\/p>\n
Blok acknowledges that many Indonesian independent farmers that solely rely on palm oil are heavily hit by this dispute.\u00a0Indonesia and the Netherlands held several meetings to discuss the issue and has produced an MoU on joint production of sustainable palm oil on September 27, 2019.<\/p>\n
He believes that sustainable CPO production will be accepted by Europeans, the\u00a0United States, and Canadian consumers.<\/p>\n
In January, President Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d Widodo deemed\u00a0the European Union\u2019s claim,\u00a0that Indonesia\u2019s CPO is not environmentally friendly,\u00a0baseless.
